Kaprun is smaller than Zell am See but it has many, many pearls that any visitor should see and many attractions that you should consider Kaprun things to do. The Kitzsteinhorn with its glacier is magnificent of course. There is no tandem paragliding from this mountain. Neither from Maiskogel. But since the landing field from Schmittenhöhe just outside Kaprun, we can still count tandem paragliding as the No. 1 activity to do here. This one is nice because it’s really fun and really cheap. It’s close to where (Kaprun) we fly so you might do it on the same day.
Really cool short hike through our beautiful gorge, even when it’s very busy. And continue around the Klammsee on top!
After doing the “Klamm”, one can continue hiking along the turquoise little lake called Klammsee. Snacks at the cosy Klammseestüberl. Climb the Bürgkogel and enjoy the views.
There is a beautiful longer hike around Kaprun called the “Ausblickrunde“. It leads to the Klamm and Klammsee as well. At the castle, one can take a short adventurous detour through the forest.
Please do visit the medieval castle in Kaprun. Possibly when there is an event like the Burgfest. All summer it opens two days per week. Do go inside and immerse yourself in history.
Between Kaprun and the Salzach river there used to be a swamp. Nowadays, “the Moos” it’s a great flat park for hiking and biking and fun fitness elements along the way.
For sure it makes sense to rent some e-bikes in Kaprun. There is the flat “Moos”, there are steeper paths and roads, and there is a fun parlours downhill from Maiskogel.
It’s great to go to the Top of Salzburg, but do it on a sunny day! Snow is guaranteed all year, also for toboganning. There is a viewing platform and a restaurant at 3000m.
Bründl is a famous name from Kaprun nerby Zell Am See. Their flagship sports gear store has a lovely penthouse café-restaurant with an awesome terrace for a sunny day. Don’t miss the photo point on the glass balcony over the river.
Lunch or dinner at the farm. That’s what you get at Stangerbauer high up on the Maiskogel. And you can reach it with your own car all year around. The food is simple, great and nice-price.
The cosy Chillas café has quickly become a household name in Kaprun. The food here is totally surprising. Delicious! And the atmosphere both inside and outside is always great.
Best things to do: Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, is mostly hidden in Kaprun, but not from the terrace of Glocknerblick high up in the Maiskogel area. Ski there in winter or hike there in summer!
A “wild” tour to do is the Staudamm. Take a bus or car up to Alpenhaus Kesselfall. Hike from there or take the bus. Then hike up to the dam, which generates tons of electricity. The views are unbelievable.
Even in a non-seasonal article about Kaprun we must mention the skiing on the glacier since it’s possible from October through June! Even beginners can learn to ski here. This is amazing.
