Mixed Weather for Tandem Paragliding
Summer 2024 is shaping up to be a very mixed bag of weather. It’s not so bad yet my qualities as the “in-house meteorologist” are frequently demanded. Actually I do enjoy the necessity to look sharply at the weather model calculations and look to find the best slots for our very important passengers. This is year is extra challenging in that regard.
We do many paragliding tandem flights
As an example let me share the ensemble forecast roughly for the Zell am See – Kaprun and Salzburg area. The precipitation curve never flatlines! And the first 4 days have some rain daily for sure. After that a never ending stream of ocean front seems to be penetrating the European continent. Which makes me lucky that I moved from the Netherlands to Austria since over here we already have a bit of a continental climate. So the sunny spells are plenty and we do many tandem flights. But we cannot just “lean back” and fly everything.
In a country like Spain, paragliding tandem pilots have the opposite problem. No rain. Always sunny. But around noon sometimes too turbulent to fly. That never happens on our side of the Alps: here in Zell am See – Kaprun, Salzburg and Königsleiten it almost never happens that the thermals get too strong for professional pilots like we are. So we only have the rain, too strong winds (>35-40kmh), and fog to deal with.
So all in all: just feel free to book your flight! We will find a possible time slot for you!
