Tandem paragliding in Austria: what’s with the weather?
On 15th of May 2025 the (cableway) telepherique opened in Zell am See. The nice big Porsche designed gondola took us up again after a great winter and fully energised for an amazing summer season. We had many great paragliding tandem flights already, but now more and more we see that something’s off. Something’s off and it’s called the weather. Austria and Europe in general is cold and rainy and seems to stay that way for another two weeks, so all the way into the first week of June.
Still snow on Schmittenhöhe – Zell am See
Of course VIP-paragliding is intensely analysing the weather forecasts hour by hour almost. In this way we manage to find weather windows, with a few hours of flyable weather. And in the Alps many times this can be really nice weather. Like yesterday 24 May. While the higher mountains like the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See Kaprun are snow covered at the moment, the Gaisberg in Salzburg is spring like! And because the mountain is lower, we can rise higher. The flying conditions were stunning and VIP-paragliding was there to make people happy.
For the long term we use the so called ensembles of the weather models. They show the range of probable weather for the next two weeks. And well: the rain will never be far away. And from the beginning of June the afternoon temperatures in the valleys will reach above 20 or even 25 degrees Celsius for the first time this very cool spring. Tuesday and Wednesday morning is the next upcoming weather window. Then we are in for continuous rain for a few more days.
Pray for good weather and paragliding tandem flights
In the end we can only hope and pray for a nice and long phase of good weather. Everyone within their religion to their own God! Of course Arab guests are quite happy with some rain on their holiday in Zell am See Kaprun, but they also want to make a paragliding tandem flight of course. So if we all pray together, all will be good. And … to end on an optimistic note: on a rainy day I at least have time to write a blog post like this.
