Tandem paragliding Zell am See Kaprun FAQ
What is the season for tandem paragliding in Zell am See Kaprun?

Tandem paragliding in Zell am See Kaprun is possible all year around! Only 3 weeks from middle April to beginning May and the month of November the gondola (telepherique) to the Schmittenhöhe is not running and we do not fly from there. But in those weeks we can offer 2x a short flight in Bramberg or the beautiful flight in Salzburg from Gaisberg. The best “guaranteed-when-sunny” thermals in Zell am See Kaprun are from May to September. But even in March and April and sometimes in October there are many good days. In November, December and January thermals are very rare but with snowy landscape these flights are unforgettable too.
What is the best daytime for a tandem flight in Zell am See Kaprun?

If you are not sure whether your stomach is solid for a “bumpy” flight, then the early morning flights are advisable. With 1200m (4000ft) altitude difference we do not need thermals to fly close to 20 minutes. And in the early morning we often can fly by thin a thin cloud layer which is a very special experience. People who have flown before or who are eager to experience thermal lift right away, should choose to fly in the afternoon. In march this would be between 12 and 15 o’ clock, but in summer this is easily 11 to 17 o clock. In these thermal hours you can book the “High & long flight” right away. Or if you book the “Try-out magic” you can still upgrade during the flight. On the very best days “tandem paragliding addicts” might consider to book the “Ultra VIP-day” and do a multiple hour cross country flight with us.
Where are start and landing for flying in Zell am See Kaprun?

The start in all directions in Zell am See Kaprun is on the Schmittenhöhe at 2000m altitude. The landing is on a field next to the small Kaprun-Fürth Bahnhof between Zell am See and Kaprun. Across the street from our partner hotel Sonja Alpine Resort. In special cases – especially in the winter season – we can land on a field in the Schmitten-valley no more than 10 minutes walking from the valley station of the gondola. If we use the regular landing field we do the transport from hotel Sonja to the Schmitten gondola by VIP taxi (included in the price).
What makes Zell am See Kaprun so special for paragliding?

There are many good paragliding spots in Austria, yet Zell am See Kaprun and the whole Pinzgau for sure is one of the top spots. The broad Salzach-valley allows for the guaranteed buildup of strong thermals throughout the day. Rising high there are no limits, since no major airports are near. The “Pinzgau Spaziergang” is a famous ridge where solo pilots can do their first XC distances. And the Hohe Tauern National Park (fly-over allowed but no start and landing) across makes XC even more exciting here. Tandem passengers benefit from these excellent conditions since even most “Try-out magic” flights will include some nice flying in thermals. With the gained altitude nice action packed descents are possible too. All within 20 minutes. And yes: Schmittenhöhe allows for starting in all directions, so we hardly ever have to cancel booked flights. It’s just fantastic here!
Is it possible to have drinks or lunch before or after tandem flying?

Yes, at the landing site you or your onlookers can have a drink at Hotel Sonja Alpine Resort and before the start you could spend some time at Schmittenhöhe if you like and meet with the pilots there later. If your stomach is strong and the thermals not too strong having lunch is no problem. With a weak stomach or super strong. thermals it is advisable to not eat in the 3-4 hours before the flight.
Is it possible to book multiple pilots in Zell am See Kaprun?

Yes, VIP-paragliding has a 3-4 pilot team in summer time and apart from that we have close cooperation with the other tandem paragliding firms. So if necessary we can even get 10 pilots together. Normally however we would prefer to do bigger groups in 2 or 3 rounds of 2-4 passengers. The benefit of multiple rounds is that the fun lasts longer for the whole group.
