Magic of the Gaisberg just outside Salzburg
Some cities are lucky. Think of Rio de Janeiro. Beach. Mountains. Paragliding. Salzburg doesn’t offer any beach life but it has it’s rich cultural history, the castle, and Mozart. And right at the edge of town, there is a mountain called Gaisberg. It stands 1288m high overlooking the city and its beautiful surroundings. The landing site at Guggenthal is at 636m so there is a denivelation of just 650 meters. But the Gaisberg mountain almost always surprises with plenty of updrafts, so the flights are pretty much of equal length as those we offer in Zell am See – Kaprun.
How did VIP-paragliding end up offering paragliding tandem flights in Salzburg?
In November of 2023, we had a booking for Zell am See – Kaprun but in that month the cableways were in revision. So we couldn’t fly over here. Since the customer however was in Salzburg we proposed to do the flight there since in Salzburg there is no cableway issue! There is a perfect asphalt road leading up to Gaisberg so as long as it’s light we can fly. Often we try to take the public bus from the Guggenthal landing field to the top, but a taxi or one of our own cars will do too. In this way, evening flights are possible in summer. Not in winter and that first paragliding tandem flight from Gaisberg-Salzburg in Austria was extra special because the night before 60cm of snow fell! Look at the amazing images in the video.
After that first flight, the tandem paragliding in Salzburg at Gaisberg really took off for us, both via our website but also a lot via GetYourGuide.com. Because we have a bigger team now, one of us (mostly me) can always go to Salzburg to fly there while the other pilots remain at our home base in Zell am See-Kaprun. So in the meantime, we have done a lot of summer flights there and the thermals are often amazing. So it’s really common to be (much) higher than the mountain and even optionally choose the “double time flight”, that we call “All-In Wonder”.
Lately, we have been lucky to put a point on the Google map in cooperation with the butchery Lettner very close to the landing field. They have a spacey parking and a little café where we can do the paperwork while having a drink. The point on Google Maps allows us to start collecting reviews here.
